Alcohol and other drugs (AOD) counsellors

AOD counsellors work in a wide range of settings, both for DHBs and NGOs, iwi services and primary health services. They may work with individuals, families and groups and liaise with other health service providers and related services.

AOD counsellors can specialise in areas such as services for youth, detoxification, opiod substitution, residential treatment, inpatient services and kaupapa services.

Dual diagnosis (mental health and substance abuse) is another common field of employment for AOD counsellors.
